What is Secrets Management?

Definition

The practice of securely storing, distributing, and rotating sensitive credentials such as API keys, database passwords, and encryption keys.

Security Impact

Hardcoded secrets in source code are the #1 cause of credential leaks. A single leaked Stripe secret key can result in fraudulent charges totaling millions.

How to Remediate

Use dedicated secrets managers (AWS Secrets Manager, HashiCorp Vault), reference secrets via environment variables, and scan code with entropy-based detectors.
